Benchmarch
Your Career
Seven
Reasons to Benchmark Your Career
Benchmarking is traditionally
a method of improving corporate performance by comparing
an organization's performance to those of other who is achieving
greater success in some aspects. Benchmarking can
also be applied to one's personal success and objectives.
By benchmarking
your career success with CareersPlus Inc. you can
-
Discover
your potential
When working with clients, I have found that
people frequently underestimate their potential. By
not benchmarking your career, you may be short changing
yourself out of hundreds of thousands of dollars over
the lifetime and the opportunity to be in a position
that can offer other benefits as well.
-
Prepare
for a promotion
Research has indicated that the next position
in the corporate hierarchy will require changes in your
behavioral style. In today's fast paced environments,
the expectation is that you successfully handle your
new role from the outset. Benchmarking your career success
will allow you to develop those traits that are are
critical to your success in a more senior position.
-
Avoid
“The Peter Principle”
Senior executives will move to new positions
without fully assessing whether accepting this position
would be a wise decision. Sometimes, even moving to
a similarly titled position in another organization
will require a different behavioral style and career
interests than what has led to your current level of
success. You may think accepting the new position
is a great opportunity but it could be a career-limiting
move.
-
Improve
your probability of advancement
Possibly you are aware that the next position
or the one above is are not likely to be awarded to
you. There are several common mistakes that directors
and vice-presidents make that mitigate their chances
of successfully attaining higher level positions.
In my research of the factors that lead to the attainment
of the position of Chief Executive Officer, the CEOs
I interviewed avoided these pitfalls.
-
Expand
your choices.
Your success and potential are limited by the
choices you make. Unfortunately, there are many
factors of which you are unaware that influence your
decisions. Learn what these are for you and then
implement some practical strategies to make more informed
choices.
-
Open
doors to other organizations
By
engaging in the benchmarking process of CareersPlus
Inc, you will gain the clarity needed to map out a strategy
and action plan to enhance your career. When speaking
with executives of other organizations, you will have
the ability and confidence to express what you bring
to their organization.
-
Discern
new options
Recent research indicates that over 50% of
people are dissatisfied with their career or job. Many
people are in careers that they did not choose, that
they do not enjoy and which are causing them an inordinate
amount of stress, not only on the job but also in the
spill-order effect upon their personal relationships.
The benchmarking process that CareersPlus Inc. uses
can assist you in seeing new possibilities. Wake up
each morning feeling enthusiastic.

The assessment instrument
I use is continually updated using data based on the
performance of executives primarily employed in Canada.
The benchmarks are established by looking at
those behavioral traits and career interests that differentiate
the high performer from the average performer in senior
executive roles. For some positions, different benchmarks
apply for the same position due to the size, industry
or culture of the organization.
-
